Baptism River
04:05
|
|
||
Red winterberry
Contrast on canvas of white
Winding river
Flowing in the morning light
All through the night
All through the night illuminates the dark
Sound of the water
Wind bending tall pine trees
Echoes of living
Whispers of what we can’t see
All through the night
All through the night reverberate the still
Slowly transforming
Moving to where it will go
Carving the landscape
Longer than we’ll ever know
All through the night
All through the night elucidate the course

Sacred Hush
04:29
|
|
||
In the windowless room with the dust on the floor
And the old wooden rafters
He sits with his chin in his hand
And he tries not to yawn
And he leans on his knee as he watches
The heave of her chest in the lamplight
Knowing her father is watching him
To see if she’s gone
And if he could he surely would
Stay by her side, he knows he should
The wisest words, the sweetest touch
The beating heart, the sacred hush
All the scenes he’s passed through, all the heartbeats he’s heard
In the years he's been working
They follow him, hang in the air
Gentle spirits surround
Now here he sits in the windowless room
With the old wooden rafters
Watching the child as the ghosts
Overhead gather round

Trail
03:16
|
|
||
He went out to find that trail
Prayed, “Lord, please see that my will don’t fail.
The horse I ride is much too old
The way is long, the nights are cold.”
The nights are cold, the way is long the nights are cold
His friends and family placed a bet
But that tired old dog, he ain’t dead yet
The kids at bedtime sing his song
His wife still keeps the porch light on
The porch light on, his wife still keeps the porch light on
Some evening when the moon is bright
When all the world has said goodnight‘
Neath winter clouds, by waters still
He’ll ride that horse back up the hill
Back up the hill, he’ll ride that horse back up the hill

Time Flying
04:59
|
|
||
Dust off a stack of records in a bin
The corners and colors fading thin
Flip each one slowly humming to
The earliest melodies I knew
And recover some lost peace of mind
Move forward again and then rewind and feel the time flying
Stand up and drop a ten down on the bar
Walk over the the juke box on the wall
I told her I could guess her favorite song
She smiled when she told me I was wrong
I tried as she sang "Walk The Line"
To capture that moment in mind and stop the time flying
Sit back and watch the sunset on the deck
I'm not young, but I ain't so old yet
I strum out my favorite vintage tunes
And try to hear the words like they were new
So I say as the sun loses shine
"Could have been better, but I don't mind"
That's just the time flying

The Longest Nights
03:20
|
|
||
The longest nights are a question you ask
Like the whole world waiting for a season and pass and change over our time at last
Those careless days that you never recall
Pull like weighted shadows and turn winter to fall and prevents the light from reaching it all
Shine a light and look within our heavy hearts
Wonder if we were ever found or lost from the start
Moments pass like the earth stopped its spin
Leaving all we wonder unfolding within the time that’s left until it begins

The Other Line
03:58
|
|
||
Waiting on the train to roll in
The stations empty but for one other man
Who whispers something smooth as sin
Says boy, you’re best off followin’
The other line
There’s that promise back that way
Across the hills where night meets day
Don’t wait till tomorrow and brighter skies
Best follow the shadows when darkness rise
The way to life

Highs and Lows
03:36
|
|
||
I wonder why my heart is numb
I feel like crying but the tears don’t come
I hear weeping, why am I the only one
Who sits and checks his watch and thinks of lunch
The lovers seek someone to adore
Confetti streams, God knows what for
Champagne pops, why am I the only bore
Who clenches for the next big sucker punch
Am I tone deaf, what do I do
With all your highs and lows
Am I bound, how ‘bout you?
I don’t know
The hollow man he stares me down
He asks me why I don’t come ‘round
I tell him what was lost was found
The candles there, but could use a new wick
If I could just articulate
The theme I tend to complicate
I’d like to find what separates
The saints and scholars, fools and lunatics

Why Even Try
04:00
|
|
||
Why even try
To bar what’s inside
Lying just below
The shadow of what you know
That same old company is growing heavier
The rising tide over-ride taking backward
A damn tired mind
All lost and bored
Trying hard to ignore
These worn-out busted thoughts
That will never be forgot
But the sparks inside just can’t deny the pathways
So re-align and just resign to see another day
Why even try

Morning by Morning
04:11
|
|
||
Out on the waves / I try to be brave
But sometimes, I don't know what to do
Then from the shore / You call once more
And I swim once again back to you
I forget and I hide / I doubt, I deny
All the while, you wait patiently by
Each time I roam / You welcome me home
Like a father with his arms open wide
Morning by morning I see
New mercies waiting for me
Just to sit by the fire / Is all I desire
And to taste of the wine and the bread
Your tender words / The sweetest I've heard
Give me courage for what lies ahead

Wandering Course
03:50
|
|
||
Watching treebranch shadows sway in streetlight shine
Burn one down on the fire escape – retreat from passing time
Restless figures form and vanish in the shade
Their externalized defining lines broaden as they fade
I try to stay longer lost in that haze
And find a moments rest from tired ways
And what it means to be ourselves these days
Walking through an empty park soaking in the rain
Choose almost every path to follow to the end
I come across some gravestones hidden in the trees
And stop to look around and hear the sound of raindrops in the leaves
So I can place myself within the map in my mind
And trace the wandering course I improvised
And wonder where I'll next arrive
